Epic Fall Bucket List ideas for Families (free Printable)

The leaves are changing color and the air is getting cooler – fall is definitely in the air! As we prepare for the fall season, it’s a good time to start thinking about fun things to do with your family. If you’re looking for some ideas, we’ve put together a list of fall bucket list items that are perfect for bringing a little seasonal fun to your autumn. From pumpkin picking to visiting a haunted house, there’s something on this epic fall bucket list for everyone!

As the weather starts to cool down, it can be tough to plan from day to day what to do, or even wear. We’ve included an assortment of bucket list ideas for both indoors and outdoors! That way, no matter what the weather looks like, you’ll be prepared with something fun for your family to do.

Outdoor fall bucket list for families

Autumn is a beautiful time to be outdoors! These fall bucket list ideas are perfect for enjoying the cooler weather and all the wonderful colors of fall foliage.

  • Pick apples–bundle up the family and head outside for a fun day of apple picking!
  • Rake leaves and then play in them–it’s a classic autumn activity that can help you clean up your yard, and make a lot of fun. Don’t forget to jump in the piles once they are big.
  • Hayride–enjoy being pulled by horse-drawn carriages on your next hayride.
  • Canoeing or kayaking–just because the weather is getting cold, doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy being in the water. Take a quick jaunt around the lake and enjoy the beautiful fall colors.

  • Fall festival–go to a local fall festival. Our kids school always does a fall festival, but there are many in our area every autumn.
  • Go for a drive to see the autumn leaves–looking for beautiful fall leaves was a favorite activity of my grandmother. It was something that she did every year. Go for a drive to find the most beautiful leaves, and then bring home a small branch to display on her table.
  • Climb a tree
  • Horseback riding
  • Corn maze
  • Bike a scenic trail–this is one of my favorite ways to see fall colors! There is a trail in my city that runs right next to the river and the leaves are gorgeous!
  • Go trick or treating–be sure to take a mom/dad tax!
  • Go target shooting
  • Walk through the cemetery and tell spooky stories
  • Go fishing
  • Bob for apples–add this to a party, or make it part of a family night!
  • Go to spook days at an amusement park–most amusement parks do some kind of spooky/fall themed time.
  • Go to a drive in movie
  • Make a scarecrow
  • Start a Boo train with the neighbors–our kids love doing this! You leave a treat for neighbors! It’s fun to see the signs get passed on throughout the neighborhood!
  • Declutter your garage so it’s ready for winter–can you fit your car in the garage when it snows? Now is the time to get it ready!
  • Go on a road trip before snow and ice make driving more difficult!
  • Carve a pumpkin and leave your jack-o-lantern on the porch for Halloween!
  • Walk your neighborhood to enjoy the fall decorations–I love seeing all the cute pumpkins. Makes me nostalgic for my childhood!
  • Go to a pumpkin patch and learn about pumpkins. Short on time? Help your kids learn more about pumpkins here.
  • Do a turkey trot, zombie run, or other fun run as a family.
  • Visit a local farm.
  • Go geocaching.
  • Go to the zoo. Our zoo even does a Boo at the Zoo every October. Check with your local zoo to see if there are any fun events coming up!

  • Buy (or pick) sunflowers. I love growing sunflowers in our garden and then picking them for bouquets during the fall!
  • Go to a costume party or host your own!
  • Visit a pumpkin walk or other harvest festival.
  • Volunteer at a local soup kitchen, food pantry, or even just cleaning up trash in your community.
  • Make a bonfire and eat smores.
  • Visit the farmers market and make it a fun outing! Grab the spiced donuts, check out the arts and crafts, and bring home as much produce as you can carry!
  • Go to a county fair and fill up on fried foods, fun shows, and check out all the local animals!
  • Plant bulbs for spring. It may not sound like the most fun activity, but you’ll love seeing the flowers bloom in the spring.
  • Stargaze–you’ll see different stars in autumn than you would in the spring and summer. Let the kids stay up late and enjoy the stars!
  • Collect acorns. Bonus points if you can show your kids how to turn them into a fun craft!
  • Go to a national park. The crowds will be less heavy during these cooler months, and you’ll see the wonders of nature in the autumn.
  • Go to a haunted house.
  • Go to a football game.
  • Play backyard football as a family.
  • Go for a walk. Grab a sweater and the entire family as you go for a walk around your neighborhood!
  • Go on a walking tour of your city. When was the last time you visited the shops in your local downtown area? With cooler weather, now is a great time to get outdoors!
  • Go hiking on a trail with autumn leaves. Some of my family’s favorite hikes have been in the fall months.
  • Take fall family pictures–family pictures are so fun when you add fall leaves to the scene! Not to mention it’s a great way to be prepared for Christmas cards!

  • Decorate for Halloween.
